Starting An Online Business & Losing Your Mind
March 13th, 2010 by David KalinThere’s something about starting a new website business that doesn’t seem to be widely known yet among newcomers. This article is written with you in mind because I know how difficult it can be when looking for honest answers when you’re researching a new project, whatever it may be. It’s a very simple matter to bring up really, but a matter nonetheless that can shatter your hopes for success if not handled properly and early on in the process (the process of establishing a new business website). It’s a matter of “time”.
Yes, time. The one thing we seem to always be running out of that can’t be replaced. Next to our health, time is our most precious commodity in life. Without enough of it we can’t accomplish our goals, meet our responsibilities, do the things we want to do or enjoy some of the good things in life. Our time is king and, just as with royalty, beckons a certain amount of our respect. In my opinion it is the lack of time (and not money) and poor planning that is mostly responsible for the high rate of not only website failures but small businesses in general. That’s why I’m here to tell you to pony up and listen to some good old fashioned advice. Starting a business related website, while almost being a necessity these days (as a tool to enhance your offline business) is not an undertaking to be lightly considered. You should be aware that at least in the beginning, huge amounts of your time will likely be required. So much in fact that if you don’t plan for it, your offline business can easily be effected not to mention your personal life as well.
Of course not every new online start-up is actually a new company. There are plenty of small business owners who are seeking to gain broader exposure for their stores and services beyond their local communities. At first it appears that putting up a website may be a relatively inexpensive and quick solution. A bit of a challenge perhaps, you might think, but nonetheless worth attempting. The common problem here is that once the project is underway you quickly learn that this fangled website idea is taking up way too much of your time, so much so in fact that it’s quickly consuming your ability to concentrate your efforts in running your already existing offline business. This is typically when the stress starts creeping in.
You’ll need to get very efficient at managing your time, even if you have the help of a website management specialist or SEO services company because you’ll be keeping track of literally hundreds of tiny details on a regular basis. Couple this with the possibility that you may already be running an offline business (or a job) and the stress can be overwhelming for some, especially if you didn’t expect it… and that’s the point of this article, simply to bring your attention to this fact. It can be a real pitfall for some so just be aware of it. Having the support of family during this time is crucial to your success just as it is when starting any other type of new business. Operating and marketing an online product or service is very different than doing it offline and there is just so much to learn the first few years that unless you’re already very savvy you should probably consider getting professional help (if your budget allows for it).
The point here is not to be fooled by the lure of the great World Wide Web. While operating an online business can be a truly great experience and fantastic way to open new doors and new avenues of revenue for you, it’s important to realize that it comes with some gaping pitfalls that may require large supplies of patience, family support, money and most certainly professional assistance or at least advice. Take the plunge, do it… but just educate yourself and be prepared.
